"The Wassenberg Castle as a whole is a monument that is significant for human history and for the development of Wassenberg, and for which there are scientific and urban planning reasons for a public interest in its preservation and use. The castle is located within the city wall of Wassenberg in the northeast corner, on a steep hill. The complex has an almost square floor plan, at the highest point of which is the keep from the first half of the 15th century, as a smooth four-story brick tower. Opposite the church is on the eastern slope the gate tower with a basket-arched passage, on the inside still with the Gothic pointed arch. The upper floor and the roof dome date from the 18th century. To the right of the gate tower, the residential building joins in eight axes, including arched windows and hipped roof. Remains of ruins remain scattered over the plant. "

The castle complex today consists of the newer castle, which was built in the Jülich period in 1740 and was the residence and administrative seat of the Jülich bailiff. Wassenberg Castle now houses a hotel. The castle complex also includes the keep, which was built around 1400 as a multi-storey residential tower on an artificial hill as part of the renewed city fortifications. Inside, a huge chimney, a staircase and a lavatory are still clearly visible. The keep was the northernmost point of the city fortifications and the residence of the Wassenberg bailiffs and bailiffs. Among others, Emperor Maximilian II. in 1505 and Emperor Charles V. in 1543 were guests in the castle. Today everyone can climb the keep and enjoy the view over the Meinweg area, the key is available at the hotel reception.
