Wassenberg used to be surrounded by moats and swamps. The water from the nearby, swampy Judenbruch collected in ditches, swamps and small streams that flowed into the Rur. Otto IV felt these swamps in 1206, when his army was lured into the Wassenberg swamps by Heinrich von Limburg in the battle for the imperial crown during the Battle of Wassenberg. The army of the adversary Philip of Swabia surrounded them and slaughtered the opponents. However, Philip did not become emperor - he was murdered before his coronation.

With the railway and the high railway embankment, a canalization of this Jew break water began around 1910. This is how the gondola pond and the neighboring outdoor pool were built outside the former city wall near the old bleaching site in 1927.
