This is one of over 300 knight's stones of the Palatinate Forest Association. It lies at the end of a steep path and points to a fortification (= Verhau) that was installed in front of a ski jump (here: "Hauptschanze I"). To the right in front of the Ritterstein there is an old (border?) stone.“During the First Coalition War there were repeated fighting at the Steigerkopf in 1794 and 1795. During this time, the Steigerkopf was expanded into a strong fortification. [...] The two wall-like embankments and ditches are among the well-preserved ski jump relics on the Steigerkopf. They can be traced almost continuously along Schänzelstraße in an easterly direction (to Edenkoben) up to the Schanze IV obstruction.”

On the slopes of the Steigerkopf was the battle of the Revolutionary Wars 1793-1794. There are several knight stones up here, which are maintained and kept in order by the PWV.

Ritterstein from the category “theaters of war and redoubts, events and legends”. The name, like other knight's stones in the area around the Steigerkopf, refers to events from the First Coalition War (1792-1797).
This stone marks the location of additional fortifications in front of the actual entrenchment.
