Tips

  • A commercial building in Munich's old town.
The sgraffito technique is a hand-crafted plastering technique for facade design because it combines a protective building shell and an individually designed surface in one material in a long-lasting and relatively inexpensive way. The ornamental or figurative decorations of the sgraffito facades characterize the image of moderate modernism that is typical of the post-war architecture of Munich's inner city - and can still be seen on some buildings today. One example of this is the "Beck am Rathauseck" department store.

  • Ludwig Beck am Rathauseck is a department store company from Munich that was founded in 1861. The company's main store, located next to Munich City Hall on Marienplatz, is particularly well-known. It is a traditional institution in Munich and is also a tourist attraction. Upscale fashion, textiles and cosmetics are sold there on seven floors, as well as accessories, gift items, wine, stationery, books and sound recordings. The company says that its music department, which opened in 1988, accounts for around 1% of the world market share in classical music. Of the Ludwig Beck branches that opened their doors over the years, the majority were closed again by the end of the 2000s at the latest. In 2012, in addition to the main store on Marienplatz and the nearby haberdashery store Geknöpft und Zugenäht, the company operated a cosmetics branch in the Fünf Höfen under the name HAUTNAH, which opened in 2003.
