The castle was probably founded at the beginning of the 13th century or earlier, as indicated by the foundations of a residential tower from 1250, which was built from an early Roman aqueduct. In 1583 the castle was destroyed.
After the Thirty Years' War, the tower and the south wing were rebuilt, the three-arched bridge was built and the north wing was rebuilt in 1705.
In the 18th century the castle was owned by Baron Antonius von Geldern and in 1836 Franz Egon von Fürstenberg-Stammheim acquired the castle and extensively renovated the property.
