The Begijnhof is the most rustic spot in the city center of Breda. The history goes back more than 750 years. Then the court was closer to Breda Castle. In 1531, Henry III of Nassau needed the land to expand his castle. He gave the pious women this piece of land in Valkenberg. In return he promised the Beguines that the court would always have the protection of the Nassaus. He kept his word, which means that the Beguinage is now one of the two remaining Beguinages in the Netherlands.
The last Beguine died in 1990. Only unmarried ladies still live at the court. You can see how the Beguines lived and worked in the Beguinage Museum at number 29. The garden of the Beguinage is a herb garden. You will find hundreds of types of herbs there. The Beguines used these for their work in healthcare.
TIP: The gatehouse houses the Miniature and Dollhouse Museum.

In the margin: Beguinages are rare in the Netherlands, in addition to Breda there is also one large Beguinage in Amsterdam.

Stroll around this peaceful and idyllic Beguinage in the center of Breda. There is a statue in the courtyard of two Beguines in conversation. The courtyard actually consists of two courtyards, on which 29 houses are located.

The Breda Beguinage is a complex surrounded by walls consisting of houses and a small church in the center of the Dutch city of Breda. The 29 houses spread over two courtyards are grouped around a herb garden. It is located close to Park Valkenberg.
Since the end of the 12th century, the Beguines were a movement of pious Catholic women who wanted to lead a life of contemplation and prayer in chastity. Like monastics, they did not take a vow of eternal loyalty and poverty. The Beguines were often of noble descent. The movement originated in the diocese of Liège and soon communities of Beguines emerged throughout Europe. A Beguine community probably arose in Breda around 1240.
