The Grote Kerk Breda is an icon of the city, an important national monument and one of the four top monuments in Brabant. Built in the fifteenth century at the initiative of the forefathers of the Dutch Royal House, the church contains impressive sculptures, funerary monuments and vaults and murals.

The Grote or Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk is the most important monument of Breda. It also has national significance. Part of the church is the Prinsenkapel, which is the mausoleum of the early ancestors of the Dutch royal family, the Nassau-Dillenburg family.

The church is located in the center of Breda on the Grote Markt. It is a cross basilica in the Brabant Gothic style, which has been restored several times over time.

The church is the landmark of Breda. The tower of the church, visible from a distance at 97 meters high, can be climbed on some days. Upstairs there is a view over the Grote Markt and the city. The church building is free to visit and is now mainly used for concerts, courses, symposiums, fairs, fashion shows, school excursions, exhibitions and as a restaurant.

The church has been Protestant since 1637. Nowadays a church service is still held ten times a year. Baptisms, wedding celebrations, memorial services and funerals also take place regularly.

Both because of its construction and its location, the church is considered one of the most beautiful in the Netherlands. As an example of Brabant Gothic, it is the most intact and elegant in the Netherlands, although less known than St. John's Cathedral in 's-Hertogenbosch. The church is in the 'Top 100 of the National Office for Monument Care' from 1990.

The 15th century Grote or Onze Lieve Vrouwe Kerk is the pride of Breda. Originally Catholic, but reformed since the iconoclasm. In the fifteenth century, Count Engelbrecht of Nassau ordered the church to be built, including a burial vault for his family. Nine Nassaus and the first Prince of Orange found their final resting place there.

        Inside and outside
Not only the imposing architecture of the outside, but also the monuments in the church and the vaults and murals make the Grote Kerk the most important monument in Breda. Henry III of Nassau in particular contributed a lot to this. He and his wife Mencia de Mendoza brought Renaissance art to Breda.
The Prinsenkapel with its gold-leaf-covered ceiling is very special. The ancestors of our Royal House are buried here.

The Largest Museum in the Netherlands
Because of its valuable art treasures, the Grote Kerk has been included in 'The Largest Museum in the Netherlands', an initiative of the Catharijne Convent in Utrecht.
In 'The Largest Museum' there is an audio tour with which you can wander through the church yourself.

Six centuries of Nassaus and the Grote Kerk
The bond between the Grote Kerk and the Nassaus is explained through ten media players. The exhibition provides in-depth information about the Nassaus and the monuments and paintings that make the church interior so interesting.
The Kooromgang highlights the significance that the Breda Nassaus had for architecture, painting, sculpture, medieval manuscripts, tapestry and glass painting.

The Grote Kerk is accessible free of charge for at least eight months a year. A free donation for maintenance and restoration is of course always welcome. An entrance fee may apply during exhibitions or events.
