Spuidijk Canal and Village View, Goedereede

Already in the 3rd century, the area of today's community was populated by the Romans. Probably around 900, the village Ouddorp, on the then island Westvoorne. Goedereede (= good roadstead) was in the 13th century an important port and fishing village. It received the municipal law in 1312 and the market right in 1331. Goedereede was often visited by disasters. An army band devastated it in 1418; a city fire in 1482; There were flood disasters in 1421 (St. Elisabeth flood), 1530, 1570, 1618 and finally on 1 February 1953. The decline was accelerated by the silting of the port from about 1500 onwards. Ouddorp had from 1860 to 1973 a major fishing port. Stellendam was built around 1800 as a newly founded fishing village (Wikipedia).
