The botanical garden was laid out around 1840 by Count Carl von Büdingen-Ysenburg zu Meerholz and was an expression of his penchant for English landscape parks and gardens. A good 140 years earlier, the same area was a parade ground and shooting range for the Meerholz and Hailer vigilante groups. The name of the restaurant "Schießhaus" comes from the old days.
