It was inaugurated in 1903 as Rhijngeest sanatorium, nicknamed "sanatorium for nerve leaders".
The proposal to build this clinic came from Professor Gerbrandus Jelgersma, the first professor of psychiatry in Leiden.
In 1949 it was renamed Jelgersmakliniek, popularly known as “De Jel”.
On Saturday 5 June 1999 it was officially opened as the town hall of Oegstgeest.
The building has the status of a national monument.
