The pumping station, built in 1963 on Kuhlenweg in Cologne-Langel, ensures the drainage of the Cologne districts from Worringen to Merkenich and from Esch to Langel. Mechanically and biologically treated wastewater from the Langel sewage treatment plant also flows into the station. A new flood pumping station directly adjacent to the flood protection dike represented the most economical solution, increasing the pumping capacity from 3,500 liters per second to 5,000 liters per second.
The architectural design was created by the Piroeth architectural firm.
The new facade consists of rectangular steel profiles rotated by 15 degrees, which enclose the building and the assembly openings. The steel slats give the building a technical structure, while the printing adds a poetic touch. Two sides of the steel slat are "printed" with a water lily image, and the third side is "printed" with a monochrome orange color. The building thus has two surfaces: from west to east, one sees the water lily image, and from east to west, a building in an orange color. The façade is not static; it changes depending on the viewer's perspective. The volume of the building is addressed by the printing and is integrated into the movement of the building. The building is encased in semi-transparent steel rods. Depending on the viewing angle, the viewer sees either a water lily image or an orange-red cuboid.

The pumping station is now very nicely designed.
