The Philipp Bastion formed the southeastern protection of the city. It is located directly on the Oder and was also surrounded by the Warta in the 16th century. It was designed by the engineer Chiaramelli. It was built according to the plan of a square by Linari in the first construction period of the city fortifications.

In 1569, a windmill was installed on the Philipp bastion, similar to the Queen bastion. This stately mill had a small outbuilding. In 1662 the bastion was rebuilt under the direction of the Dutch fortress engineer Jungblut. The mill was demolished when the fortress was next expanded.

The French fortress engineers Cayart and Charretau built a separation wall on the bastion in 1709. It leads over a branch of the river to the Kietzer Ufer and thus forms a protective channel. The dike in the wall regulated the water level around the fortress. In 1726 this canal was rebuilt.

In 1738 six cannons were installed on the bastion. The corner towers of the bastion fell victim to the Russian bombardment of 1758. Another modernization took place in 1770, this time by the engineer Colonel Petrii. During the next modernization from 1891-1899, the first waterworks was installed on the bastion. This served both the fortress and the residents of the city.

At the same time, a miniature tower was built on the wall, which contemporaries referred to as the "monk's head".

The Philipp Bastion was a protection for the entrance to the city and fortress, later also for the Kietzer Tor and the routes to and from Frankfurt and Sonnenburg.

In 1929 the "City History Museum" was built in the bastion's casemates. When the fortress was rebuilt in the 1930s, the bastion's protective wall was removed. During the war, the casemates served as protection for the defenders of the city.

The bastion suffered badly during the Russian bombardment. Similar to other buildings in the fortress, it was built from bricks. The inner rooms were partly plastered and laid out like the letter "C".

The bastion is still today (better: today again) a pearl of the Küstriner fortifications. It is planned, similar to before the war, to open a city and fortress museum on its premises.

It is worth visiting the museum BEFORE visiting the ruins of the old town. Among other things, a film is shown in which historical images have been edited together with a camera movement through the current buildings and parts of the city. This helps you to better understand the heavily overgrown remains of the buildings and the former layout of the city.

Very nice part of the old town. The museum is great. Well designed and maintained. A must for history enthusiasts
