The Westergasfabriek was built between 1883 and 1885 for the British Imperial Continental Gas Association. At the time it was the largest coal gas factory in the Netherlands. The gas was initially used for city lighting. The main building was designed by the French railway engineer Camille Polonceau. He devised a construction in which buildings with an explosion hazard were treated with roof tiles, so that in the event of an explosion only the roof would fly off. At the beginning of the 21st century, the site was cleaned up and the buildings restored. Now it has a cultural destination under the name Westergas.
