Worth seeing church with a small garden.

The Diakoniekirche (until 2006 the Kreuzkirche, before 1930 the II. Lutheran Church, also known colloquially as the Hippenkirche) on Friedrichstrasse is the oldest church building in the Elberfeld Nordstadt in Wuppertal.

The Lutheran community in Elberfeld, which had grown in size, decided in 1847 to build a second church. A small elevation north of the closed buildings in Elberfeld was chosen as the building site. The popular name Hippenkirche is said to come from this location (Hippe - "elevation") or from the goats grazing around the church, also Hippe in the dialect. Some community members contributed significantly to the construction costs of 24,000 thalers through donations, but under the condition that "the church to be built on the property always remains the property of the Evangelical Lutheran community and that another community that does not stand on the basis of the Augsburg Confession and the other confessional documents of the Lutheran Church can never become the owner of the church." It is uncertain who actually designed the church. Schinkel's student Friedrich August Stüler was at least an advisor on the plans, and the construction work was led by a city architect, Heuse. The church was inaugurated on May 15, 1850 and originally had seating for 1,032 people.

Due to the high maintenance costs, the Diakonie has been trying to sell the church since 2017. Extensive protests from local residents have led to the sale plans being put on hold again for the time being. After the Wuppertal community of the Kimbanguist Church expressed interest, it was questioned whether it could finance the church in the long term. At the end of 2017, with a high level of citizen participation, new ideas will be sought on how the church can be preserved as an open meeting place.
