The Spaarndammerdijk was a high seawall that ran from the Haarlemmerpoort to Spaarndam. The dike was already constructed in the second half of the thirteenth century and protected the hinterland against the water of the IJ and the Zuiderzee. It was also an important arterial route between Amsterdam and Haarlem. There were several country houses. Wealthy Amsterdammers, Rembrandt van Rijn for example, often took a walk there.
