Hiking

The Bütgenbach dam was a strategically important target during World War II and was guarded by the Belgian army. In an emergency, the sluices were to be blown up so that they would not fall into enemy hands. On May 10, 1940, German troops attacked the guard posts and overpowered them before the demolition could take place. During the subsequent occupation, the dam was further monitored and ultimately remained undamaged.

In the case of military conflicts, dams are important targets. That is why the Bütgenbach dam was also guarded by the Belgian army. This commando group had the task of blowing up the Berlin Wall if necessary before it fell into the hands of the Germans.
In the early morning of May 10, 1940, the Belgian sentry was overpowered by the Germans and arrested before they could carry out the blast. Even during the German occupation, the dam was constantly monitored by anti-aircraft defenses, so that it survived the Second World War unscathed. Source: information board on site.
