Today's area of the orchard at Dominikaner Bongert in Kalkar corresponds largely to the state of the Kalkarer map of 1574 and has a size of 1.3 hectares. Surrounded by an old city wall, the irregular, characteristic shape of the orchard on Leybach has survived the centuries and is still today in the same place as 500 years ago.

In 1453 a Dominican monastery was founded in Kalkar by the ducal family of Kleve, in which about ten Dominican monks lived and preached. Important works of art were found in the monastery church, and the monastery had a large library. After secularization in 1802, the monastery church and most of the monastery buildings were demolished, and the works of art were scattered across the region's churches. Today only the wall of the monastery bongert, which was restored a few years ago, and the former fish pond are reminiscent of the former monastery.
