Today's area of the scattered fruit tree meadow at Dominikaner Bongert in Kalkar largely corresponds to the condition of the Kalkar city plan from 1574 and covers an area of 1.3 hectares. Enclosed by an old city wall, the irregular, characteristic shape of the orchard on the Leybach has survived the centuries and still stands today in the same place as 500 years ago.

In 1453, the ducal family of Cleves founded a Dominican monastery in Kalkar, where about ten Dominican monks lived and preached. The monastery church contained significant works of art, and the monastery possessed a large library. After secularization in 1802, the monastery church and most of the monastery buildings were demolished, and the works of art were distributed to churches in the region. Today, only the wall of the monastery vineyard, restored a few years ago, and the former fish pond remind us of the former monastery.
