The islands of the Cyclops, also known as the Faraglioni of Aci Trezza, derive their name from Greek mythology, in particular from the legend of the Cyclops Polyphemus, immortalized in Homer's Odyssey. According to this epic narrative, Polyphemus, blinded by Ulysses, projected imposing rocky boulders against the Greek hero in an attempt to prevent his escape across the sea. These boulders, thanks to the anger of the Cyclops, were transformed into the majestic Faraglioni that we admire today. The Homeric tale unfolds along the suggestive Ionian coast of Aci Trezza, a place already known and frequented by the ancient Greeks. Already in the first verses of the ninth book of the Odyssey, the description of the landscape emerges which is still intact today: "In front of the port an island lies, Lachea nomata, where the rural goats grow in droves."

The Cyclops Islands are a small group of islands in the Ionian Sea. They are located off the east coast of Sicily in the Aci Trezza district of the municipality of Aci Castello. The archipelago includes the islands of Lachea, Faraglione Grande, Faraglione di Mezzo and Faraglione degli Uccelli, as well as some rocks (Wikipedia).

The name Cyclops Islands refers to Greek mythology: Polyphemus, one of the gigantic Cyclops, captured Odysseus and twelve of his companions in order to feed on their flesh. After Odysseus had managed to deceive the giant with a cunning play on words, to blind him together with his six surviving companions by force and to flee, the giant threw several boulders after him, which fell into the sea near the mainland coast. According to the story, this is how this group of islands came about. The islands are of volcanic origin and formed about 500,000 years ago when basaltic lava erupted on the seabed.
