This is what makes the area so interesting:
The Schöppenstedter ponds are only a few kilometers away from Braunschweig. In 1997 the former clarification ponds of the sugar factory closed years ago looked like a lunar landscape - desolate and uninhabited. NABU has now leased the area and worked hard to convert it into a refuge for water birds.
