The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1269 as "novum castrum" (new castle). At that time, the castle belonged to the Bamberg Bishopric and was the official castle, i.e. the administrative seat, of the Bamberg bishops for the surrounding lands. In 1323 the castle was first called Veldenstein.
