The Kalverbos nature reserve is an area that used to be flooded by the Zeeschelde. The construction of the Ringvaart and the construction of the dikes created a nature reserve, part of which was raised with dredging sludge. The old sand extraction pit is now a pool with various water birds that can be spotted behind an observation wall.
