The planetary trail between Runkel and Villmar

A planetary trail is a special type of trail that features a scaled-down model of the solar system along the trail. Our solar system includes the sun and the eight planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. This planetary trail depicts our solar system on a scale of 1:1 billion (1:1 000 000 000), i.e. one meter on the planetary trail corresponds to 1 billion meters or 1 million kilometers in reality. The sizes of the sun and the eight planets as well as their distances from one another are adapted to this scale.
The planetary trail is a project of the Johann Christian Senckenberg School Runkel / Villmar. The idea developed within the school's astronomy course, which had existed for several years, and was implemented by its students and the teacher responsible for it, Patrick Fitz.

Starting from the model of the sun, you hike up the river along the Hessian long-distance cycle path R7, past signs to the respective planets at the appropriate distances. These signs contain pictures, a lot of information and an illustration of the respective planet in the scale of the planetary trail. If you walk along the 4.5 km long planetary trail, you will move through our solar system at three to four times the speed of light! Of course, you can also return comfortably by train from Villmar to Runkel, perhaps you should first visit the Lahn Marble Museum in the immediate vicinity of the Villmar train station.
