The sculpture stands for the openness and willingness to engage in dialogue in the modern Evangelical Lutheran Church. She is reminiscent of Catherine of Alexandria, who, according to legend, convinced 50 Roman scholars of Christianity in a discussion.

According to the current state of research, Katharina never lived, but is modeled on the Greek scholar Hypatia of Alexandria. She was a mathematician, astronomer and philosopher and taught at the Alexandrian School (a kind of university) until her 415/416 AD. was killed by Christians.
