It was built as a school and garrison church and is now a parish church.
Like Osnabrück as a whole, it was badly damaged by the war damage during World War II, but was rebuilt in 1955.
In 1990 it was extensively renovated and the old existing building structure was combined with modern design elements, e.g. the baptismal chapel and the ceiling construction.

It is a branch church of St. Peter's Cathedral.
Art-historically the most valuable piece of equipment is a late Gothic Crucifixion group from the 16th century by the sculptor Evert van Roden from Münster (Westphalia).
