Robert Koch is considered the founder of modern bacteriology. With his scientific research he lays the foundation for hygiene, disinfection and sterilization in medicine. Because of his achievements, the former mining town of Clausthal made him an honorary citizen during his lifetime.

Robert Koch was born on December 11, 1843 in Clausthal as the third son of thirteen siblings. Both parents come from respected mining families. Therefore, Robert's career plans initially went in a similar direction: in 1861 he still aimed for a career in mining. Even his mediocre high school diploma at Clausthaler Gymnasium gave no indication of his bright future at that time.

In 1863, after two semesters of studying philology, he decided to train as a doctor.
