The Salzwedel Gate is the only well-preserved of the four former city gates. It was built in the 16th century and was an important part of the city's fortifications. The two mighty battery towers in front of the gate have a diameter of 9 and 18 meters. In 1907, the gate was reconstructed by Prof. Dr. Otto Stiehl. Among other things, the stepped gable above the gate entrance was carefully recreated based on old models. A general renovation was carried out from 1991 onwards and the large bastion was extensively renovated in 2013.
