The Collegiate Church of St. Augustine is the only completely preserved example of late Baroque architecture in Bolzano.

"In 1163, a canonry was founded in what is now the Don Bosco district of Bolzano. When this monastery fell victim to the floods of the Eisack in 1406, the Habsburg Duke Leopold gave the Augustinian canons the late medieval castle of the Counts of Tyrol in what is now the Gries district. The fact that this is a castle is still evident today from the ring wall, the palace and the towers. The Augustinian canons' foundation was, like most monasteries, closed in 1807 after Tyrol became part of Bavaria. When all monasteries in Switzerland were closed in 1841, the Benedictine monks from Muri in Aargau found a new home in the monastery complex in Bolzano: the current Benedictine Abbey of Muri-Gries was created.

Today, the monastery is known above all for its beautiful nativity scene collection, which is open to the public. The baroque collegiate church of St. Augustine, on the other hand, dates back to 1788, but In 1416, a church stood here. Numerous frescoes and seven altar panels by Martin Knoller (1725 - 1804) decorate the interior. He is one of the best fresco painters of his time in southern Germany and Austria. By the way: The church bell of the collegiate church, the Augustinus bell or Kaiser bell, weighs over 5 tons and has a diameter of 201 cm, making it the second largest church bell in South Tyrol and also one of the heaviest!"
