The Tharandt Forestry Botanical Garden, also known as the Saxon State Arboretum, was founded in 1811 by Heinrich Cotta and is one of the oldest scientific woody plant collections in the world. With around 3,200 different tree and woody plant species on 34 hectares, it is home to a unique variety of plants from all over the world. The collection of North American forest formations, which has been greatly expanded since 1997, is particularly impressive.
