The first mill was built in Jemgum in 1448. As the name suggests, rye was originally made into flour here. It is known that this wooden rye mill was dilapidated in 1637 and was rebuilt in 1676 after being destroyed by a thunderstorm. It was not until 1777 that the wooden mill was replaced by a gallery Dutch windmill. After numerous renovations, the mill was destroyed by German troops in 1945. The stone substructure is still preserved today and has been used as a residential building since 1972. On the street side (Deichstraße) there are still remnants of the old dike. The access to the building leads through a “Diekgatt”, a “hole in the dike” that was closed with wooden planks when there was a risk of storm surges.
