As a result of the operational needs of the Papenburg-based Meyer shipyard, the massive barrage at Gandersum was built in an imposing construction project between 1998 and 2002, where it has since been able to dam the entire Ems to increase the depth of the fairway. In this way, it is possible to tow the mighty cruise ships from the Emsland shipyard undamaged down the Ems to the Dutch Eemshafen time and time again in a nationwide popular spectacle.

With its 50 meter wide main and inland waterway opening, which is closed by a segment gate, as well as its five side openings, the hydraulic barrage has the ability to block the Ems within 30 minutes. for understandable reasons, the opening only takes 15 minutes longer.

The interesting building can be viewed from both sides of the Ems. The visit on the tour along the Ems is definitely worth the little detour.

In 1998-2002, this barrier was built to protect the coast. An impressive structure that is considered one of the most modern dams in Europe. Technology that excites.

The barrage in Gandersum has seen many a large ship from the Papenburg Meyer shipyard and provided them with the necessary handbreadth of water under their keel during the passage from the shipyard to the deeper Ems.
