In Roman times, the border between the administrative units of Cologne (Civitas Coloniensis) and Tongeren (Civitas Tungriensis) ran, among other things, from the Weser up the Hill to its source.
A national border had crossed the high plateau of the High Fens since 1816, first between the Netherlands and Prussia, since 1830 between Belgium and Prussia and since 1870 between Belgium and Germany. This border ran from Eupen in the north up the Hill to the source of the Hill, from there to Baraque Michel and along a New Vequée to just before Hockai.

Boundary stone 157 is the last of the series of Belgian-Prussian boundary stones, because from here (downstream) the Hill is so wide that its course formed a clear boundary line.
