A magnificent church building, standing in front of the entrance portal makes you feel pretty small.

The monastery church of Banz bears the patronage of St. Dionysius and St. Petrus. The famous church, the foundation stone of which was laid in 1710, can be recognized from afar as a masterpiece thanks to the skillful use of the scenic location and the design of the exterior with a towering double tower facade. Like the Benedictine monastery Melk the Danube valley, Banz dominates the Obermaintal on a correspondingly smaller scale.
Although the church is not overly large, it shines with its special spatial effect. The interior is not angular, but designed with many "rocked" ellipses.

The former Benedictine Abbey of Banz, founded around 1070, experienced the greatest prosperity in its history during the Baroque era after a period of decline during the Reformation. Like the entire monastery complex dominating the Main Valley, the monastery church of St. Peter and St. Dionysius was also rebuilt at that time (consecrated in 1719). This was matched by a spiritual flowering in the 18th century: Banz was one of the most important centers of the Enlightenment in Catholic Germany and produced numerous respected, learned monks. After secularization in 1803, the monastery served as the palace of the Dukes of Bavaria, later briefly became the seat of a Trappist convent, and in the 20th century housed the "Society of the Holy Angels," responsible for pastoral care abroad. Since the late 1970s, the buildings have served as an educational center for the Hanns Seidel Foundation, which is affiliated with the Christian Social Union (CSU).
Even though the former monastery and current parish church, designed by Johann Dientzenhofer, is not actually a pilgrimage church, it nevertheless contains – as one would expect in a Catholic church from the Baroque period – numerous Marian references, such as Mary among the apostles in the depiction of Pentecost in the ceiling fresco of the central main dome, the Coronation of the Virgin Mary above the choir altar as the culmination of the entire iconographic program, an expressive Pietà on the cross altar, and the modern relief with scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary in the lower church. However, Banz became a station on the Marian Way for two additional reasons: Firstly, the Feast of the Rosary is still solemnly celebrated there on the first Sunday in October. Even in the monastery's time, there was a significant Rosary Brotherhood, to which the miraculous image of the "Queen of the Rosary" (front left) and the Rosary Altar with its medallions depicting the mysteries of the Rosary bear witness. In addition, the miraculous image of "Mary of Good Counsel" has been venerated in Banz for 300 years, and its feast day is celebrated on April 26.
