The Cross of Pratomagno is the most characteristic place of the mountain of the same name that divides Valdarno from Casentino.

    ...

Located in an incomparable panoramic position, at 1592 meters above sea level, where the 360° view extends for kilometers and kilometres.

    ...

It was the first days of February 1926 when the Franciscan father Luigi da Pietrasanta found himself preaching in Raggiolo, the village closest to the ridge on the Casentino side. That year was the seventh centenary of the death of Saint Francis (3 October 1226) and together with Don Francesco Bordoni they developed the idea of celebrating this anniversary in a solemn way.

They presented the project to the bishop who welcomed it.

Two committees were created, one in Casentino and the other in Valdarno, which decided to place a Monumental Cross on the summit of Pratomagno, right in front of Mount La Verna, where Saint Francis had received the stigmata.

On 14 August 1927 the first stone was laid with a solemn ceremony which saw the participation of all the parishes of the two valleys

    ...

The inauguration of the Pratomagno Cross took place on 2 September 1928.

For the occasion, Father Luigi da Pietrasanta celebrated the first Mass in front of the small chapel at the base of the cross, still not completed, and established that the solemn feast of Pratomagno be repeated every year on the fourth Sunday of July, as still happens today.

On 21 July 1929 the Chapel of San Francesco was inaugurated, where an image of the Saint in glazed terracotta was placed.

    ...

The Pratomagno Cross, however, given its particular exposure to atmospheric events, has suffered various damages and restorations over time.

The greatest damage occurred between 5 and 6 November 1966, the night following the flood in Florence, when strong storm winds divided it into two pieces.

The restoration was long and difficult, finishing only three years later, on 15 August 1969.

At the end of the works, the Pratomagno Cross was lower than the previous one and with a more resistant base.

In 1989 there was a new renovation by the Pratomagno mountain community during which it was fenced off. A company in Milan provided 210 kg of red paint free of charge for painting the iron parts.

Wonderful place full of charm. It is said that going around the cross once you reach the top is a good omen for the future.
