The remains of the castle walls, its characteristic houses built in local stone, arranged according to the concentric scheme of the ancient medieval castle, contribute to living in the village a particular atmosphere that invites you to discover things of a past time in its simplicity. Inside the walls, through the narrow paved streets, you reach the small square where the church of Santa Maria Assunta is located, an extraordinary Romanesque church, built in the 11th century on the remains of the ancient parish church of Santa Maria in Advena as it appears in a ancient document of 780 AD with which Charlemagne donates it to the Nonantola Abbey.

The origins of Poggio di Loro are medieval: the boundary walls, the gateway to the town, the architecture of its houses and the clearly Romanesque-style church are unequivocal proof of this. Poggio di Loro had an important history in the Middle Ages, also because a road passed through here which, crossing the Pratomagno, connected the Arno and Casentino valleys. This helped Poggio di Loro to "market" its products: coal and chestnuts in the first place.
The town is tidy, villages and paved streets intertwine among the well-renovated buildings.
