Vallombrosa Abbey

The very first construction in this area dates back to the beginning of the year one thousand. After numerous works and renovations over the centuries it became a splendid Abbey which today is located along the route of the Chapels of Vallombrosa.

Abbey founded in 1038 by Giovanni Gualberto, from an illustrious Florentine family, which became the mother house of the Order of the same name. It houses several interesting works of art.
From 1867-1913 the monastery housed the Royal National Forestry Institute (later moved to Florence).
The monastery church is open to visitors and the old pharmacy offers the possibility of purchasing local products, particularly from the neighboring forest.
