Tengboche Monastery is located at an altitude of 3,867 meters and is the largest monastery in the Everest region. It was built in 1916. In its century of existence, it had a troubled life: in fact, the monastery was first hit by an earthquake in 1934 and then by a fire in 1989. In both cases, the monastery was rebuilt also thanks to a large number of volunteers.

Tengboche is the largest monastery in the Khumbu region at an altitude of 3,867 m. The monastery was destroyed by fire in 1989. With the help of volunteers and international financial support and donations, it was rebuilt. When we visited in 1991, the shell was completed; the work on the outer facades and the interior fittings had not yet started.
In March 1994, the reconstruction of the Tengboche Monastery was completed. However, a recent storm had damaged the roof.

The most important monastery in the region. Tourists are welcome there.
