Gouda already had a fish bank in the 15th century. The current fishing banks were established in 1588 and were covered in 1600. The banks were rebuilt again in 1676 and in the 18th century the commissary's house for the supervisor was built. From the Middle Ages until the 19th century, the fish bank on the Lage Gouwe was reserved for the Gouwernaars. There were traders from outside Gouda on the Hoge Gouwe and that bank was also called the "foreign fish market".
