The Westerholt colliery was a hard coal mine in the area of the city limits from the eponymous Herten-Westerholt to Gelsenkirchen-Hassel, with shaft 1 standing exactly on the border, shaft 2 in Hassel and shaft 3 in Westerholt. At the time of its decommissioning in 2008, the mine was the last producing mine in the city of Gelsenkirchen.
