The Westerholt colliery was a hard coal mine in the area of the city limits from the eponymous Herten-Westerholt to Gelsenkirchen-Hassel, with shaft 1 standing exactly on the border, shaft 2 in Hassel and shaft 3 in Westerholt. At the time of its decommissioning in 2008, the mine was the last producing mine in the city of Gelsenkirchen.

Then, from 2016, the fallow land became a green area, which was completed in 2020 with just a few missing additions. As a "Park of Change", under the working title "District Park Hassel" or most beautifully under the new name "Glückaufpark Hassel" (various spellings, including "Glückauf-Park" or "Glückauf Park"), a hilly landscape awaits visitors today, which is criss-crossed by paved paths and which can be used by cyclists and walkers.

It stands out from many locations in the park behind the Hassel houses when looking west. A skater park will be added near this lookout hill. Parts of the park in the southern area are used for agriculture again, a small area is forested. [...]

Nice little park with freshly paved trails. Unfortunately, it will probably take decades before you will find a shady spot there.
Trees need to be planted first...
