  • The Westerholt colliery was a hard coal mine in the area of the city limits from the eponymous Herten-Westerholt to Gelsenkirchen-Hassel, with shaft 1 standing exactly on the border, shaft 2 in Hassel and shaft 3 in Westerholt. At the time of its decommissioning in 2008, the mine was the last producing mine in the city of Gelsenkirchen.

It is not only from there that the large spoil tip Oberscholven with its two wind turbines can be seen, the highest tailings tip in the Ruhr area. It stands out from many locations in the park behind the Hassel houses when looking west. A skater park will be added near this lookout hill.
