The forest of the Count of Westerholt is a large forest area between Westerholt and GE-Buer. Between 1968 and 1988 the count's lion park was located here. At first, 42 lions were kept in a specially prepared area, which could be observed freely moving out of the car. In 1974 a small animal zoo was added and lizards, hanging pigs and flamingos could be admired. There was also a petting zoo.
After the contract between Count Westerholt and the city of Gelsenkirchen expired in 1988, the park was closed. A large part of the lions could be sold at a Spanish zoo and was thus saved from falling asleep.Today the forest is open to the public again. The China restaurant "Löwenpark" is located in the former buildings of the park. In the northern part of the forest area, the resting place nature was established by the Count of Westerholt a few years ago. Here you can have yourself or your relatives buried in the great outdoors of the beautiful Westerholter forest.
