The St. Mary's Church is located in the former Küblingen and has been part of Schöppenstedt since 1929. It used to be a pilgrimage site. Legend has it that the holy Virgin Mary appeared here to a Herr Rieseberg and, at her request, placed a picture of grace in this place, whereupon many sick people sought healing. Here you could buy letters of indulgence, who now wants which can contact me. ;-)

Pilgrimage Church of St. Marien in Küblingen (historical building)
Küblingen is a "district" of the place Schöppenstedt. The church itself is also located in Küblingen. The angular construction with two wings is interesting. In the past, men sat in one part and women in the other. the altar was arranged in the middle so that the pastor could be seen at the sermon, but men and women could not see each other.
In the Middle Ages, the Marienkirche was a well-known place of pilgrimage, which, according to legend, was very popular because of a miraculous image of the Virgin Mary brought there in 1291.

Küblingen can look back on a long history. As early as 966, the place was first mentioned as "Cugelinge". Historical sources show that Küblingen, as a royal court, was an important stopover on the west-east route from Aachen to Magdeburg.

In the heart of the village stands the Church of St. Marien, which can be seen from afar. Initially there was a parish church at this location, but in the 14th century a Marian chapel was built at the same time, which was used exclusively for Marian worship and became a place of pilgrimage. Just a century later, there was no longer enough space and the chapel and church were connected. This gave the Marienkirche its unique shape with two naves pointing in different directions (to the east and to the south). Due to the shape of the church, in earlier centuries the people of Kübling celebrated the church services separately according to gender: the men sat in the southern nave, the women in the eastern one. Thank goodness that has changed nowadays.

Especially on high feast days and special occasions, the places in the church are well filled. Especially, of course, at the annual Marian festival around the church. Since its reorientation a few years ago, this festival has become more and more popular and has become an integral part of cultural life in and around Schöppenstedt. This has to do not least with the colorful program for which the church council is responsible and that this festival is celebrated ecumenically.

In addition, the MGV Küblingen delights a large crowd of listeners with the choir concert every year. This makes it clear: St. Marien is an essential part of life in the village and brings people together.
