The Ilmenau pond area consists of six ponds and is fed by the Rottenbach in the east of the city. With an area of around 100 hectares, it is one of the largest natural wetlands in Thuringia.
The Ilmenau pond area includes the large pond in the middle, the Neuhäuser pond to the southwest, the Dixbix pond to the west, the Brandenburg pond to the northwest, the stone pond to the north and the Prinzessinenloch to the northeast. The large pond owes its name to the fact that it is the largest of the Ilmenau ponds. The Neuhäuser pond was named after a small, nearby settlement that today belongs to Ilmenau, the Neuhaus. The Dixbixer pond probably got its name from a previous tenant named Benedikt or his short form Dix.The ponds could be created at this point because the subsoil is made of gypsum stone, which prevents the water from running off. In addition to the abundance of information boards, the Ilmenau nature trail is warmly recommended to the curious.
