Vicente Moreno Baptista was born on Nueva Street in Antequera – in the place where the Modesto bakery was, on whose façade a tombstone commemorates the event – on January 7, 1773.

On June 12, 1792, he entered the army as a distinguished soldier, destined for the Roussillon War, where his courage, sometimes bordering on recklessness, directly promoted him on September 30, 1795 to Cadet of his regiment, and on April 1799 to Second Second Lieutenant. In September 1800 he was promoted to first Second Lieutenant, and took the opportunity to request a marriage license and on December 9 he married María Teresa Velasco García. On July 16, 1805, he was promoted to Lieutenant.

In 1808, Napoleon invades Spain. Vicente was appointed assistant to the Second Battalion of his Regiment, on November 30, 1808. His military successes against the French earned him a promotion to Captain on January 5, 1809, and he then devoted himself to all the "guerrilla" actions carried out in Sierra Morena. On February 8, the French appoint a government in the city of Malaga.

Captain Moreno consolidates his guerrilla in the stronghold that the heights of El Torcal de Antequera offered him. Lieutenant Colonel Bellangé in command of the detachment in Malaga, overcome by the terror his troops felt, set a trap using a Spanish traitor, who summoned Vicente Moreno to his house in Navazo Hondo, to tell them that they would spend that night French couriers with important bags of documentation. On the night of August 2, Vicente Moreno and his 40 men were taken prisoner. The Frenchman offered Vicente Moreno his freedom and the rank of colonel in the name of King José I if he swore to obey the monarch. Moreno responded with the famous phrase "the honor of a Spanish patriot is not for sale." Later, they transferred him to Granada, taking his wife and children to his cell to weaken him emotionally due to their constant crying. It didn't help at all. She dried their tears and asked them to stop crying, because that was what the French were looking for and to go to Ciudad Real where both she and he had family.
