The convent of Madre de Dios, of the Dominican order, was founded at the beginning of the 16th century by the Duchess of Medina Sidonia, Leonor de Rivera y Mendoza. It is located in the historic center of the city of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, where it occupies a large block with facades to the four streets that surround it. Its architectural structure responds to the usual religious needs, with a church, choir, sacristy, cloister, cells and a small garden.

The Countess of Niebla, Mrs. Leonor Manrique de Sotomayor y Zúñiga, was the one who, starting in 1575, the year in which she retired to the convent with her granddaughter Leonor de Guzmán, would end up shaping the definitive form of the convent. At this time the choir and the vault of the church were built, as well as a beautiful room for the personal use of their benefactors and where they would reside until their death. These years correspond to the moments of splendor of the Madre de Dios convent.

On the exterior façade of its church, two beautifully decorated baroque windows stand out along with the main doorway from the 17th century. Inside, you can see its splendid choir, made of mahogany and cedar wood, and interesting artistic works of a devotional nature, such as the painting of the Virgen del Sudor that processions every year along the outer perimeter of the convent to commemorate the miracle performed by this image in the 17th century, freeing Sanlúcar from the plague epidemic.
