Tips

  • The Märjelensee is one of several picturesque small mountain lakes that lie on the edge of the Aletsch Glacier in the rocky Merjelental. From here you have a fantastic view of the glacier, a spectacular adventure hike offers many highlights and is well worth it.

  • It used to be one large lake, but today it is made up of several small lakes. In the 19th century, when the Aletsch glacier was at its peak, Lake Märjelen was naturally dammed - at the time it was around one and a half kilometres long and 500 metres wide. The increasing runoff through crevasses in the glacier caused several floods in the Massa valley.

  • In the 1980s there were always small floating "icebergs" that broke off the edge of the glacier.
