At the westernmost end of the Rügen peninsula of Mönchgut there is a shoreline called Swantegard, or the holy area. In this shoreline there is a deep pit called the Nuns' Hole. It is still very deep, although very old people in the area still remember that it was filled in many years ago. Before it was filled in, it was so deep that no one could find its bottom. In the past, when there was still a Catholic nunnery in the town of Bergen, nuns who had committed crimes were brought to this pit. Instead of being walled up alive, as was customary in other Catholic monasteries, they were thrown down into this pit.
