From here you can see the castle of Nieuwenhove and read a few things about it on an information board. Don't feel like reading on the spot? A few words here: the castle with farm buildings, known today as 'castle of Nieuwenhove', was the playground and summer residence of the abbots of Sint-Truiden since the thirteenth century. In 1340 it was completely renovated under abbot Amelius van Schoonvorst and from 1521 to 1525 it was enlarged and renovated by abbot Willem van Brussel. The current farm was built in the seventeenth century under abbot Hubert Germeys and the castle in the eighteenth century by abbot Jozef van Herck. It was also in the eighteenth century that Nieuwenhoven became the permanent residence of the abbots. These were turbulent times for the church. After the French invasion it was also sold. During the second half of the 19th century, renovation works were carried out in English neo-Gothic style.
