From the city you enter the citadel via the Pasqualini Bridge, built in 1993 using modern technology over the remains of the old bridge piers, and the south gate (gate tunnel). A look to the right and left makes the defense concept clear: in the cannon yards behind the withdrawn flanks of the bastions were guns, for which every attacker, including those in front of the opposite bastion, was within reach. The ditch between the ramparts or bastions and the counter-wall could be flooded up to the edge of the natural stone base. The citadel is accessible from the north via the dam that was raised in 1860 and the north gate.festungsstadt-juelich.de/index.php?index=43

The modern bridge construction over the exposed old bridge pillars takes some getting used to.
