The church owes its origin to the Gallo-Roman cemetery that was located on the Grote Markt.

This church bears witness to a mix of Scheldt Romanesque and early Gothic style elements. The arches and simple portal have a Romanesque feel, but the transept and choir certainly have Gothic elements.

The tower, containing a double triforium, dates from the 13th century.

The choir, with aisle and radiating chapels, is on the west side, which is exceptional. The pointed arches of the separating arches under the crossing and the ambulatory with the 3 radiating chapels are said to date from 1464.

The marble choir room is 17th century.

In 1940 the church was destroyed. The reconstruction was completed in 1968, which clearly gave the church a more original Romanesque character.

The ship is Romanesque. The transept and choir have vaults whose style reveals that they were built on the transition from Romanesque to Gothic. The marble balustrade that closes off the choir dates from the 17th century. The crossing tower was built in the 13th century and is characterized by a double triforium.
Between the nave and the transept are two chapels. One of them contains the tomb of Jacques Castaigne from 1327. The pleurants who mourn his passing show considerable wear and tear.

Two polychrome statues dating from 1428 have been placed against the pillars of the crossing. This group of the Annunciation is the work of sculptor Jean Delemer and painter Robert Campin, two masters of Tournai of whom hardly any other work has survived. The group originally came from the Sint-Pieterskerk, which was demolished in 1821. An in-depth restoration was completed in 2010, respecting the results of previous interventions (preservation of the 19th-century heads, hands and wings).
