    Karner, Hainburg a.d.Donau

The Romanesque ossuary dates back to the first quarter of the 13th century and was built as a two-story cemetery chapel. The ossuary was in the basement and the sanctuary for the funeral mass was on the upper floor.

The circular building of the ossuary in the middle of the cemetery, made of smooth blocks, is to be regarded as an important architectural monument in the Romanesque style and dates back to 1225, during Hainburg's medieval heyday. The two-storey building has lost much of its effect due to later structural changes. In the basement was the ossuary (charnel house), in which the bones from the Freidhof were kept. Interesting are the numerous Steinmazzeichen, which can also be found in many other buildings in Hainburg and the surrounding area, giving us such an aid for dating (Ungartor, Karner von B.D. Altenburg, parish church of Petronell and Wildungsmauer).

The Karner was a chapel for the dead and dates from the first quarter of the 13th century. In the lower area there was the so-called ossuary and in the upper area the funeral masses were held. Not far from the Karner, a light column was erected around 1400. The rectory was not built until 1738 and was redesigned again around 1800.
