It is believed that the stone served as an old Germanic place of worship in prehistoric times. [4] In the past, the ridge was treeless. There was then possibly a direct north-facing visual relationship to the camel near Westerhausen, which is also regarded as a place of worship, which could have been important for observing the sky. According to a legend, a tone sounds from the bell stone on Walpurgis Night and shows the witches the way to the Hexentanzplatz, where they celebrate and move on to Blocksberg together. [6] Other details name the Brocken as the destination. [7
